A 30% reduction in daily calorie intake reduces the decadence of the brain in relation to age.  This is the result of a study conducted on laboratory mice and the results were published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

In the study researchers reduced the calorie intake by 30% in  genetically modified laboratory mice apt to develop prematurely neurodegenerative diseases.  After a three-month diet the mice showed a delay in the development of neurodegenerative symptoms, with a slower loss of neurons.

«There is great interest in finding composts that mimic the benefits of a reduced calorie intake and that could be used to delay the onset of problems and diseases associated to aging», explains Luigi Puglielli, who studies aging at the University of Wisconsin.

A result similar to that obtained by reducing calorie intake was obtained by administering a particular gene, Sirt1, to laboratory mice.
