In the very near future eggs may be obtained from the skin of infertile women. In mice it is possible to produce eggs from iPS, eggs that can be fertilized and produce fertile offspring. Additionally it has been demonstrated that, when transplanted into the seminiferous tubules of mice, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells obtained from the skin of men who are unable to produce sperm produce human sperm. The need to employ mice as bioreactors will soon be bypassed and the process of genesis of the gametes will take place in vitro. These studies suggest the possibility of deriving even egg cells from the skin of men and sperm from the skin of female, gametes from senescent individuals, descendants from the same individual or individuals of the same sex. These artificial gametes can be used for the treatment of infertility.
